Background
For people who own property in Portugal or Spain, in the past the use of non-resident special purpose companies based in countries such as Gibraltar and the Isle of Man was the sensible way to arrange ownership. That all changed in 2008 when the Portuguese Government changed their classification of such countries, and property companies domiciled there became subject to huge annual tax bills. The trust laws in the American state of Delaware made it a popular choice for re-domiciliation of these property companies.
